Praying Mantis

  1. Wow, I love those guys! What great close-ups. They're beautiful when they're prey-less, but gruesome when they're eating....

Sad news to pass along. I just read Wayne Winterrowd died. Another great gardener and writer. What a loss.

  2. There seem to be lots of them around here. I see many egg cases (can't remember the technical name) when the leaves fall. I see their presence as assurance that things are going well in the garden, ecologically speaking.

I'm sorry to hear about Wayne Winterrowd.

  3. Nice pics! Looks like she's ready to deposit and egg-sack somewhere! I was so excited to find a mantis in the garden last year, but haven't seen a single one this year :-( Oh well, maybe they are just better at hiding than I am at seeking!

  4. This is one insect I see a lot here. I really should learn more about them, and what their presence says about the state of the environment.
